Public domain content is a term that is often found on the Internet.
Writers, photographers, and private filmmakers often take
on jobs that use public domain content but many people have no idea
what that actually means. At the core, public domain content such as
artwork, music, or any type of writing is the work that is not
protected by copyrights or patents and can be used by anyone for
free. This applies to anything that either has never been patented or
copyrighted or when copyrights expire.
Public domain content doesn't have laws restricting its use by the
public so anyone is free to use it for anything they wish. Many
times this type of content is quite old but new public domain content
is continually created all the time. Some types of public domain
content will never be copyrighted like standard plots, basic
characters, and US Government documents.
There are all kinds of places where you can find public domain content. By doing a simple Internet search, you should be able to
turn up many different websites that host public domain content for
free, donation, or for a small membership fee. Depending on what you
want, you can decide what is right for you. Once you have found a
work that you really like and have a good idea about, you need to
make absolutely sure that it is free of copyright or patent. You can
read much more detailes about that here.
You can use public domain content for whatever you want and really
don't have to change one thing if you don't want to. The problem
with this is that if you have found a really great story, odds are it
came from the 1920s or earlier. This obviously isn't very compatible
with today's world or technology so you will want to change a
majority of the material. Words and phrases from that era don't make
any sense in today's world and if left unchanged will present
problems.
So, how do you actually make money with public domain content? Let's
take old legends and stories as an example. These traditionally hold
up quite well and have great family value and moral content that many
new stories lack. By changing the format of these old stories, they
become yours. By changing the format, you can make a presentation, E-
book, or record them yourself as an audiobook. These are all very
popular and only growing larger. By having such things available on
your website for purchase, not only are you sharing a bit of history
with the world but building a nice market that you can promote in
numerous different ways.
Another great idea to make money with public domain content is to
watch what's hot in the market. Remember the Pirates of the
Caribbean explosion over the past few years? That would have been a
premiere time to check out some classic books and short stories about pirates from 100 years ago. After all, what better material
could there be than novels written closer to the time of pirates?
The same can apply to almost any subject.
Offering compilation CD's of many stories or different types of
music is always a good way to make a few bucks off public domain
content. Collectors and those that remember much of this older music
always love to share it with others and are more than willing to pay
for it. Old time radio programs fit into this category also. There
are some real gems out there that people would love to give or
receive as gifts. The only limit to profiting with public domain
content is your imagination.
