Have A Plan

How do you plan?

Well, there’s no one way to do this. Because every business is different and because everybody has different desires and skills, each plan is going to be different.

However, there are some basic things that you can do that will make planning your business a lot easier.

  • List Interests – If you’re first starting out, make a list of the things that you’re interested in. It’s a lot easier to run a business revolving around something that you like than to run a business doing something that you have no knowledge of and don’t even care about.

  • Decide Priorities – Sit down and decide what you’re going to do and in what order. Also decide what you’re going to do and what you’re going to hire others to do. For example, if you know that you’re not good with web design and have no desire to learn it, then you will need to find somebody who you can trust to design your site for you.

  • Make Goals – If you’re first starting out, you want your goals to be simple. Don’t set out to make a million dollars in 30 days. It’s not going to happen. Make short term goals for yourself and also make long term goals. Write them down and check them regularly to make sure that you’re on course for meeting them.

  • Take Action – All the plans in the world are meaningless if you don’t take action. Once you’ve mapped out what you want to do and where you want to go, the next step is to start taking action on those plans.

If you do just these few things, you’ll find that you’ll be a lot more organized when it comes to running your business.

Having a plan makes things real. It firmly plants your goals in your mind. It makes it so that you’re not waking up each day asking yourself what you’re going to do.

There is an old saying and I know it’s a big cliché, but it goes like this…

“Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.”

Make a plan and stick to it.

Learn Something Useful Every Day

When I first started marketing online, I knew nothing. Literally nothing!

What was the result?

In my first 5 months of trying to make a living on the Internet, I made $28.

I want you to firmly roll that figure around in your head for a while. That comes out to $5.60 a month. I worked 14 hours a day. If you do the math, I made about 1 cent an hour. If you think that’s making a living, then you’re not living on planet Earth.

Yes, I was a total failure.

So, the next thing I did was go out and get an education.

I learned about advertising, copywriting, ad writing, web design, and everything that I could get my hands on. I was so hungry for knowledge that I was starved to death. I couldn’t learn enough.

Fast forward a few years…I am now making more than enough online and I don’t have to work a job any longer.

Do you think that education had something to do with it?

If you don't know what you're doing, you can't run a business. This one little article that you’re reading is part of your education, and it is just a miniscule fragment of that education. There is no such thing as a natural salesman. Even if you have the gift of gab and can write, you still have to learn how to do market research, how to track ads, how to test and so on. There is so much to learn that it is mind boggling. So education is another one of those things that are a must if you're going to run a successful business.

Now we get to the $64,000 question.

How do we get this education?

Well, there are several ways you can go about doing it. Choose the one you feel most comfortable with.

Ebooks – There are tons of ebooks out there that will teach you just about anything you want about running a business on the Internet. The downside of learning from ebooks is that it can be very expensive since each book usually concentrates on one specific area.

Forums – There are educational forums online that have many marketers attending who are quite knowledgeable. You’ll usually find a lot of what’s in these ebooks at these forums. The problem is that you usually have to go hunting for this information.

Search Engines – If you look up any topic on a search engine, you’ll usually find at least a couple of sites that offer instruction on that topic for free. The problem with this approach is that it can be quite time consuming in finding everything that you’re looking for.

The bottom line is that education is a must. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can’t run a business unless you get others to run it for you. To do that, you need tons of money for all the salaries you’re going to have to pay.
